In the wake of the success nu-metal bands have had these last few years, yet another group of angry young men are trying to grab our attention in an aggressive and in-your-face manner. The band's name is Drowning Pool and their debut CD is called 'Sinner'. The first single released in Holland is 'Bodies' and, contrary to what many people think, is not about death and destruction, but about mosh-pits.
Drowning Pool's Dutch gig was scheduled for the Melkweg in Amsterdam. This venue has two halls and the nu-metallers were supposed to play the smaller of the two, while at the same time the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club would be playing in the larger hall. However, on arrival it appeared that the two bands had switched halls. The reason for this is unclear and a bit strange, considering the BRMC seems to have a larger fan-base than Drowning Pool. The result was a half-full hall, loads of room to move about and very short waiting time at the bar.
As for the gig itself: it was loud. Very loud. Extremely loud, even. Of course a (nu-)metal gig has to be loud, sure, no problem. But this was way too full-on. Fortunately the quality of the sound was alright. This emphasised the fact that Williams has a good voice. He does need to learn to use it to its fullest potential, though. It seems as if he doesn't always have the nerve to give it all he's got.
The closing song, of course, is 'Bodies'. When the crowd hears the first notes they go wild. Surprisingly the drummer takes care of all the lyrics in the song's chorus. Even more surprisingly, this guy has a great voice! Which makes for two great voices in this band that, for some reason, feels the need to play at such a volume that you tend to focus on that and forget the great voices.
The conclusion of the evening is that while Drowning Pool isn't a bad band and their music is quite all right, they're nothing special either.
