This show was sold out so quickly, 013 considered rescheduling it to the big hall. Thank god that plan didn't follow through. Death By Stereo should be seen in a small, sweaty place and not in a theatrical cattle hall like The Choice.
As everyone was hanging their coats, buying merch, and drinking their first beers, Lá Par Force got the show started. The band played innocent emocore I couldn't be bothered with. Call me a male chauvinist pig, but I'm not too keen on bands with women in 'em. Especially when they're on vocals.
The highlight of the evening came right after that. With two brilliant albums and a notorious live reputation, Death By Stereo came, saw, and conquered the place. Combining creativity, craftsmanship, and humor onstage, there is no way of getting around DBS. It could be Boy Sets Fire fans thought otherwise, but DBS was definitely the band of the evening. Their singer, whose vocal capacities are as impressive as his mohawk, spent half his time running through the audience intimidating women, who had no clue as to what to do with this character. Onstage, he was constantly stressing the importance of having fun during a DBS show. The announcement of hilarious song titles like 'Hippie Holocaust' and 'You Mess With One Bean, You Mess With The Whole Burrito' was enough to elicit a big smile. Or: "This song is about catholic priests. It's called 'Ssshhh . . . This will be our little secret.' " Apart from that, the band can play like hell, as was to be heard during 'Emo Holocaust,' off the new CD, coming out in March. The combined solo of both guitar players was clearly inspired by Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman. One of the best shows I've seen this year!
Boy Sets Fire is currently making the step from the underground to a much
larger audience. As these things go, the older fans are now accusing the
band of selling out and setting aside their principles. Still, the band
could count on a lot of support. Their show was sort of a metaphor for
their career. It started off with harder songs and gradually evolved into a
more melodic part of the set. BSF proved they can still give away a good
show, but they were no match for Death By Stereo.
