How did Utopia Parkway take shape? Was it a combined effort?
"Well, it was much more of a band effort than the first record, that’s
for sure. Chris and Adam write all the songs, then we kinda bang it out
for a few days in a rehearsal studio before putting it on tape. I
remember that "red Dragon Tattoo", one of my favorite songs on the
record, totally happened by accident!
The really cool thing though, was that throughout the album we noticed a
reoccurring theme of travelling. You’ll notice that I think 10 of the 14
songs refer to trains, cars or things like that....that’s where the title ‘Utopia Parkway’ came from."
Did all the sudden commotion around the first album create extra pressure upon the production of the latest album?
"I don’t really think so....I think the idea was to just make a better
record than the first. We’re not out to sell a million records, just to
do better than last time out, I think that’s a healthy way to look at
it."
In what way does the new album 'utopia parkway' differ from the first album?
"I don’t think a lot of people realize that Jody and I didn’t play on the
first record since our pictures and names are on it. We came into the
picture as it was released. But in my opinion it’s a more mature
record...sounds WAY better and has a much more interesting vibe
production wise, you can hear it on say valley of malls to denise to
go hippie, the songs really have they’re own unique
personality...also, it really does make a difference when the band is
playing live with each other. I love the first record though..it’s real
immediate and catchy...I just think this one is the next logical step
for FoW, I’m very proud of it."
What's in the planning for the next couple of months?
"We’re in Germany right now, will spend another few weeks in Europe. Then
it’s off to the US to do Radio Festivals. After that probably Japan,
then???????"
What's been playing in the tourbus lately?
"The new Echo & the Bunnymen, Spiritualized at Albert Hall and Jody’s new
band ASTROJET"
What's your opinion on MPeg3 distribution of your songs over the Internet? Do you think that record-companies are overreacting?
"It’s the wave of the future and I don’t think they’re over reacting at
all...it’s really gonna blow up, not exactly sure when, but you can
believe it’s gonna. A lot of people are shitting their pants right now."
What are your most favorite places on the web?
"I guess like Joe Bass’ (POSIES) page because I designed it and because
he’s a friend of mine...it’s a really intimate page as well. That’s at:
http://www.seanet.com/~skyward
I really use the web for mail and news to tell you the truth...it’s
great for travelling...it’s the WORLD WIDE web after all!!"
Which is to your opinion the best live act at the moment?
"I don’t get to see many bands to tell you the truth! The last band i saw
was the Cardigans in Seattle...i was very impressed. I love the record
immensely, and thought that they really pulled it off live, no small
feat, that!"
How do you experience the contrast (The almost sold-out Melkweg and the 40 people at Vlerk in Rotterdam, last February) between a tour with Chariot and FOW?
"Interesting question! i've always felt that you can never be above
taking chances as a musician, you really have to try a lot of different
styles, approaches, and bands to be better. Some times they are more
succesful than others. I t was funny because we figured that since
holland was always great for the Posies, that CHARIOT would be fairly
well received...not the case at all. That’s OK though...we’re not
finished yet!"
Last one: already have any plans for this New Year's Eve?
"We are supposed to play New Years Eve in Hawaii...would that be tits or what?!"
