WHO?
The Perishers are Thomas Hedlund, Martin Gustsfson, Ola Klüft, and Pehr
Åström of Sweden. They are from a town in the northern part of Sweden
called Umeå. Martin, Ola, and Thomas grew up in the same neighborhood while
Pehr was raised in a small village outside of Umeå. The four of them went
to the same school, where they met and started playing at school concerts
and shows. The band, as it is today, was formed in 1997.
SO WHAT'S THE DEAL?
The first lines of the opening song from their debut album From Nothing To One
immediately set the tone for what we can expect: "If everything's the same
when I wake up tomorrow, I'm giving up." The Perishers make sad thoughts
sound romantic, and also make us wonder where they come from. Is it because
of life in Sweden? Singer and writer Ola Klüft explains: "The lyrics are
sad basically because I find it a lot harder to write happy lyrics than sad.
Once in a while I try to write more uplifting songs, but they tend to turn
out really bad. Also, it's when I feel unhappy that I feel the urge to write.
When I'm happy I rarely do."
WHY ARE THEY SO GOOD?
In this world there is always room for fragile music with a sad theme. The
beautiful songs by The Perishers hit you immediately, because they're so honest
and personal. It made me wonder if people start worrying about them. Ola
Klüft: "The ones that know us probably don't worry. They know that we aren't as
depressed or unhappy as one may think reading the lyrics. They know that we
are just as happy or unhappy as everyone else. In the song In The Blink Of
An Eye, he speaks directly to someone. Is this person fictive or non-fictive?
In a way both. I was thinking of a certain person while writing the song.
Someone that once really disappointed me. But the lyrics are very
exaggerated, like a lot of my other lyrics, as well. I just find it easier
writing that way. The person in this song hurt me but did in no way wreck my
life, as one may think reading the lyrics."
The same goes for My Home Town, where he sings about something that made him
cry at night: Ola: "When I wrote that song a few years ago, I was sick and
tired of Umeå. Partly because it's rather boring over there and for half
the year a cold and dark city. But mostly because at the time it felt like
everyone at my age had an opinion about me and most of the time a bad one.
Even people I had never even spoken to. Unfortunately, I realized that I was
just like that too. I guess that happens in smaller cities, and its really
sad. Once again, the lyrics are exaggerated. It wasn't really so bad that I
cried at night. But it was a rough time for me. A time that made me leave
the city, and I lived in Stockholm for two years. Now I live in Umeå again
though, and I like a lot better than last time."
So far the band has received a warm welcome in Sweden. Thomas Hedlund: "The
people in Sweden in general have responded very well to our album. We've
sold a lot more records than we dared to dream about, which is very nice, of
course. And the press has also seemed to really like our album, at least by
judging from their reviews."
WHAT HOLDS THE FUTURE?
Thomas Hedlund explains: "Right now, we are making some new songs for our
upcoming album; we are actually rehearsing — something we haven't done too
much the last couple of years. So we are really enjoying playing together in
our rehearsal room. We are also doing some festival gigs, here in Sweden." It's
not clear if the album will hit the stores in other countries. Thomas:
"Of course we want to put the album out in other countries, and go playing
abroad. But to launch an album outside of Sweden costs a lot of money, so we
just have to wait and see if our record label [MNW] can afford it."
