WHO?
That's Saybia from Nyborgm, a town on an island in Denmark. The band consists
of five people: Søren Huss (vocals and acoustic guitar), Jeppe Knudsen
(bass), Sebastian Sandstrøm (guitar), Palle Sørensen (drums) and Jess
Jensen (keyboards). The band just released their debut album.
SO WHAT'S THE DEAL?
The band was formed in 1993, but since 1997 it consists of the same members as
today. The band released two singles last year, 'Fool's Corner' and 'The Day
After Tomorrow' and became very popular in their home country, Denmark. Over
there they won the P3 Prize, awarded by Denmark's Radio in acknowledgement of
its music, and they have just been nominated for two Danish Music Awards in the
categories "New Name of the Year" and "Danish Rock Record of the Year." The
band isn't that famous in the rest of Europe, but the video of their latest
single, 'The Day After Tomorrow,' is sometimes shown on MTV Nordic. During the
next two months they will be on tour in Denmark, and some of the concerts are
already sold out.
WHY ARE THEY SO GOOD?
Their debut album, 'The Second You Sleep' (released on EMI / Medley Records
Denmark), can easily compete with Coldplay's 'Parachutes,' Travis' 'The Man
Who,' and recently, 'Between The Senses' by Haven. You could also call them the
Danish Kent. The style of the 11 songs on the album isn’t that original, but it
also doesn't pretend to be. You listen to the album the first time and you
recognize the songs the second time. When you like the high voices of, for
example, Thom Yorke, Matthew Bellamy, and the singers of the aforementioned
bands, you will also be charmed by the sharp tones of Søren Huss.
Highlights are the warm 'The Day After Tomorrow,' the title track with
beautiful acoustic guitar and a little piano, and the intense 'Snake Tongued
Beast.'
WHAT HOLDS THE FUTURE?
You never know, but let's hope the people outside Denmark will like them as
much as in their own country. The album has an international potential, so with
some attention in the media Saybia might be able to come a long way. But first
an intensive tour through Denmark.
