who?Tim Harrington (vocals), Seth Jabour (guitar), Syd Butler (bass), Harrison Haynes (drums) & Gibb Slife (guitar).
the story so far? Like thousands of other bands in the music history they met at school. In this case the Rhode Island School of Design. That was in 1995. This, by the way, is the same school the members of the Talking Heads went to. So far they've released a handful of 7"'s and two albums, 3/5 (1997) - each copy of the lp came with 3 shower caps - and 'The Cat And The Cobra' (1999), on Syd's own French Kiss label.
why are they great? Rock. It's a funny thing, isn't it? You would think that 47 years after Elvis Presley set foot in a studio for the first time it would be finished, everything imaginable would be done at least once, nothing left to explore. And most rockbands at the moment sound like that's indeed the case, not so Les Savy Fav. For some reason these five guys manage to take something as old-fashioned as 'rock' and make it sound incredible fresh. Like they are the first bunch of guys ever to make a bit of a racket with some guitars, a bass and drums. But it's all in the subtle differences. Les Savy Fav's unique version of garagerock combines a Sonic Youth-style or even postrock-like preference for aural experimentation with a hard-edged (emo-)punk attitude and is characterized by loud, dissonant guitars, a driving bass, in-yer-face, shouty vocals and, in their own words, 'disco' drumming. It's, in one word, ace.
so, what's next? What's Next? I have no idea, to be honest. But I sure hope they'll come to Europe any time soon, because their liveshows are supposed to be legendary.
