Past
"We've been playing together for over seven years now, and we've called
ourselves Kamino since a year and a half. It took five years via the classic
way of demos, local free festivals, rock contests, bad experience with our
first record deal, etc., to find out what we really wanted, and that is: Try
to make beautiful music, and try to keep control on what's happening with
that music. So we have our own recording studio, and the album is released
by a good friend of ours who runs a label.
Recently a fifth member, Jonas, joined the band on keyboards. He's only 18,
while the others are 30-something. So Jonas gives the band a whole new
drive, to say the least..."
Belgium
"There are lots of scenes in Belgium (Antwerp: dEUS, Zita Swoon, Flowers for
Breakfast. Ghent: Soulwax, Das Pop, Arid.), but we don't belong to any of
these scenes, and we also don't desire to. We're based in Antwerp, but the
Antwerp scene has no influence whatsoever on our music, we think."
Love
"'Universal Love Music' is an album about love and the loss of love. It was
only after a while that we realised most of the songs had the same theme,
and, once that was clear, the last few songs were deliberately written with
that Universal Love-idea in mind. Most of the songs have their origin in
true life, but of course they're an exaggeration. We're big fans of
shamelessly emotional music such as country music (Hank Williams rules!) or
emotional pop such as Elliott Smith."
Boysbands
"'Boybands Are Everywhere' is not about boybands. It's just an image to
illustrate the ultimate sadness of the main character in the song.
Everything is going wrong, and on top of that we're flooded by bad music,
and noone really seems to care about it any more... That's a bit of the idea
behind the song.
We've been trying for months and months to find a female keyboard player but
it seemed impossible... So yes, now it's five guys, but the macho talk in
the dressing room is not really impressive... We're just five shy guys, even
if we're incredibly sexy (or just because we're incredibly sexy - I don't
know.)."
Hobby
"One is still a student and the other four are an architect, a journalist,
an industrial designer, and label manager at a record company... We hope to
keep it that way, because our jobs are a guarantee to be able to do as we
please on a musical level. We don't have to live off our music, so we don't
have to care about sales or hit singles ... If we want our next album to be
an industrial hardcore record, we can do that without a problem, without a
record company getting worried about our career, or without us getting
worried about being able to pay the rent."
Rock
"Good rock is always good pop (with more guitars & uglier haircuts)."
Humour
Universal/Personal
"All lyrics are based on true stories, but none of them literally. Once the
song is written, the story starts leading its own life. And I love to
exaggerate or to get dramatic in a funny kinda way. So yes, humour is also
important. I think most of the songs have a tongue-in-cheek sort of humour
in them. At least I hope so."
Future
"The album will be released in Spain, Italy, France, and Scandinavia. We
will only be touring in Spain, Italy, and France. We will only be touring in
Scandinavia if they pay us ridiculous amounts of money or if the climate
over there goes through significant changes in the months to come.
A new single is out in Belgium: 'I Have Got To Love Me'. It includes a video
clip, in which singer Hans gets beaten up by two girls - an unbeatable
concept!
And we hope to have finished the new album by the end of the year! First
rehearsals suggest that it might well be entitled 'Universal Love Music,
volume 2'..."
