WHO? Funguson is Pål Ingholm (Guitar/vocals), Espen Helvig (Bass/guitar/vocals) and Tom Bye (Drums).
WHAT'S THE STORY SO FAR? It all started out in 1992, when guitarist/singer Pål traded his skateboard for an electric guitar, teamed up with bass player Espen and drummer Tom to form a band, even though they couldn't play at all. Today, eight years later, they haven't only learned to play, but also developed their own unique sound, making them one of the most interesting bands we've seen and heard in Norway in a long time.
The band was originally named Fungus, but to avoid confusion with the Swedish group with the same name, they recently changed their name to Funguson, definitely a name to remember.
Their autumn '96 release 'Tied Without A Leash' EP got great reviews in newspapers and magazines, and was sold out within four months after it was put out. This opened up a lot of doors for them: Funguson were invited to the largest radio shows, got to open up for Sebadoh at the independent club "So What!" in Oslo, and could finally afford their own band bus. The year after, they won the "So What! Award", a prize that goes to the best Norwegian unsigned band of the year, and went to the Quart-festival in southern Norway to play with Stereolab. Funguson also have appeared as support act for artists like Mogwai, Steve Westfield, The Soundtrack of our Lives, and the three Norwegians last year joined Karate on the Scandinavian leg of their European tour. Following the success of their first EP, they released the 'Friend Of Mine' EP in '97, featuring 4 songs, including one live track and a beautiful, moody acoustic tune.
WHY ARE THEY GREAT? Great? They're tremendous! It's hard to describe why, it's just a feeling you get. Listening to their songs makes you feel good, like when someone surprises you with a box of chocolate and you realize that the goodies inside are all of your favorite kind. The Funguson live shows are characterized by intense performances, but also reveals good humor in communication with their audience, and it's obvious that they enjoy what they are doing on stage, turning every gig into a happy occasion. Once you've got a taste of the Funguson-flavour, you can't resist it.
WHAT'S NEXT? The Funguson guys are currently in the studio mixing their debut album with the working title 'Penguin Love Game', featuring 11 new tracks of stunning caliber, taking catchy pop-tunes to a whole new level. Even though they still are unsigned, you shouldn't be too surprised if you hear the name Funguson in the future, because they're on the road to stardom for sure.
