WHO? Brassy is Muffin Spencer on vocals and guitar, Stefan Gordon on guitar, Karen Frost on bass and Johnny Barrington aka DJ Swett behind the drumkit ánd the turntables. And yes, Muffin is the sister of Jon Spencer of the Blues Explosion.
WHAT'S THE STORY SO FAR? Fascinated by the UK music scene Muffin moved from her New England home to Manchester as soon as she graduated from high
school and within weeks she was trying to get a band together. In 1996 a couple of
musicjournalists coughed up the money to release first couple of singles
but sadly they weren't very succesful. Two years and countless livegigs later
they find a new home with Wiiija, also the home of bands like bis and
Cornershop.
So far Wiiija has released three Brassy-singles - the most recent one, Work
It Out, was voted Single Of The Week in the NME not lang ago - and their
debut-album is on the way.
WHY ARE THEY GREAT? Because they are funkee. There seems to be a whole wave of exciting, predominantly female and in most cases new, bands taking the whole Jon Spencer/Beck-thing a couple of steps further. Think of Cha Cha Cohen, Le Tigre and Boss Hog on their newest album, but Brassy are definitely the leaders of the pack. Their fusion of hiphopbeats & scratching, new wave-guitars and punkattitude will without a doubt have you jump up and down like you are mad in no time. Nothing can compete, with the B R A double S Y beat!
WHAT'S NEXT? They're currently on tour in the UK with Idlewild; their album 'Got It Made' is out 22nd of May and the 22nd of April they'll play at the London Calling festival at the Amsterdam Paradiso.
