One of the coolest bandnames around; Zen Guerilla. Two, almost
equally cool titled, very good albums ('Positronic Raygun' & 'Trance States
In Tongues'). A mix of
the best of Led Zeppelin, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and James Brown.
Blistering live performances. Unstoppable grooves. The drummer who uses the
most sticks per show. The bass player who gets most drumsticks on his head
per show. Afros. Zen Guerilla's got it all. But most of all Zen Guerilla's
got soul. Just listen to the magnificent 'Fingers' or their cover of
Bowie's 'Moonage Daydream'.
The only thing that keeps them down for the moment is that live they got a
lot more soul than on their albums, where they chose a more rocking
approach so far. But if they can get that heavenly inspired gospel-feel on
their third album, there'll be no stopping the Zen Guerilla.
(Well, maybe the lack of a good website. www.zenguerrilla.subpop.com will have to do for now!)
Candybar Planet isn't a band that is going to make big money in 2001,
but their second CD, due to come out any time now, is a CD which is
certainly on my lookout-list. They started out as a stonerrock band, but
have evolved their style into an excellent heavy rock. If they can keep the
quality they displayed on their 10" they've released a few months ago, I
certainly need to reserve some space for these guys in my personal top 6 for
2001. Check their site for more info on the band and the release at
http://home.wxs.nl/~plukk000/.
2001.......Hardcore is rising!! Thanks to Shutdown the roots of NY
Hardcore City will break the surface this time. They created a hardcore
resurrection with their new high-energy sound. The fusion of massive guitar,
breakdown drums and vocals shows what hardcore is all about in this
millennium. Hardcore bros, see it for yourself at www.shutdownnyc.com! Peace...
A5tro5oniq from Holland is one of the best stonerrock-bands in the
world right now and this year more people are going to realize this. It's
quite seldom you hear a band in this genre with such a big diversity. Black
Sabbath, Motorhead, Funkadelic, Hawkwind, Deep Purple, it's all in there,
mixed up with lots of cool samples and loops. As soon as I heard their debut
album, which immediately got a place amongst my all time favorites, I was
convinced. The guys from QOTSA too, after they saw A5tro5oniq opening up for
them. How about you? Go check out their album 'Son Of A.P. Lady' and you'll
definitely agree! You can visit them at www.come.to/freebird.
Does Linkin Park need any introduction? Already big in the USA, this
band is going to take over the world in 2001! Their single 'One Step Closer'
is already doing very well, but the album 'Hybrid Theory' hides a lot more
surprises for you. Listen to songs as 'Papercut', 'Runaway' or 'In the End'
(with a Backstreet Boys-break in it! Really!) and it's clear that this band
has the capacities and the guts! More information can be found at www.linkinpark.com
You might say: "you can't bring up The Hellacopters as being The Next
Big Thing, because they are already big". Well, let's just say The
Hellacopters are The Next Bigger Thing, alright? The songwriting on their
new album 'High Visibility' has improved extremely compared with their
former albums (not saying those are bad, not at all!). It actually offers
you some real popsongs.Their latest album 'High Visibility' was released on
Universal Music, a major label putting out a major album. Time has come,
dear radio stations, for this band to receive some airplay, 'cause hey, if
The Hives can do it, then why not The Hellacopters? Visit their cool site at
www.hellacopters.com!
The (International) Noise Conspiracy are ultra-swinging Marxist
garage-punks from Sweden who seem to believe the dancefloor is the best
place to start the revolution. And they might be right, because of all the
great Swedish rockbands of the moment, The (International) Noise Conspiracy
write the catchiest songs. Non-frontman
Dennis Lyxzén (being good Marxists, they're a collective in which every
member is equal) already generated a lot of buzz with his previous project,
Refused, whose album 'The Shape Of Punk To Come' is still getting more
popular. The (International) Noise Conspiracy however might be the project
that generates enough mass-appeal to start the revolution. Even the
capitalist pigs at Amazon.com couldn't resist their grooves and declared
'Survival Sickness' the alt-indie-punk record of the year.

The popularity of At The Drive-In is going to grow in 2001. Not only
is their earlier work being re-released by Revolver Records to make it
accessible for the bigger audience. They've also currently shot a video for
'Invalid Litter Dept.' with Anton Corbijn (longtime photographer and
video-maker for Depeche Mode, U2 and many other bands). I think we're not
only going to see them on MTV, but also on the bigger summer festivals. I'm
looking forward to it!
San Francisco Bay Area is introducing something, which will definitely
strike like lightening. With their own style of emocore - incorporate the
sounds of groups like Primus, Deftones and Incubus - Fingertight
opens a passage to a new dimension. Their impressive way of music style will
carry the torch along 2001. Check some samples at www.fingertight.net.
From Zero is a band from Chicago that is definitely gonna blow things
up in the year 2001. With their unique sound - their song 'Smack' can be
described as a blent of System of a Down and Mindless Self Indulgence! -
they should be able to convince everyone that nu-metal (or how you want to
call it) isn't dead at all. Perhaps thanks to From Zero, nu-metal will be
more alive than ever in the year 2001 and will receive some totally new
input. After all, this band has different faces, as the amazing 'Smack' or
the fragile 'The other side' prove. Check 'em out at
www.fromzero.com and you'll be convinced soon.
