Opening with a song that would have made Mogwai's 'Rock Action' so much better: It shows at which level Zoppo act these days. Zoppo, the Amsterdam-based collective that released the suprising 'Belgian Style Pop' in 1999, follows that album with an album that is even better. Why? Because Zoppo have an amazing feel for heartbreaking melodies and know exactly how to put them together in their ingenious songwriting. Because they are not afraid to rock out in the sparse, but strategically-placed noise parts. But, most of all, because they do their completely own thing with widespread and often-used influences from bands like Slint, Sebadoh, and Sonic Youth. And a surprisingly little amount of Belgian style pop. In the past, Zoppo were often referred to as a lo-fi band, recording in living rooms, but for 'Les Aumonts' they moved on to some real studios. This has had a definite influence on the output: a cohesive sound and atmosphere. And it's the intimate atmosphere, with the emphasis on melancholy (that trumpet in 'The Sky Is Full of It'!), which makes the album a great trip to listen to. To make the story complete: The dry and direct production is precisely what the music needs. No bad things? No negativity? No drop-outs? Actually, no. 'Les Aumonts' is a fantastic album with no weaknesses, only highlights. Great band.
