Zen Guerrilla are capable of blitzing any venue. It is simply impossible to capture the amount of sweat, soul, groove and sheer volume these rock 'n' roll commandos produce on something like aluminium or vinyl. Albums like 'Positronic Raygun' and 'Trance States In Tongues' only hinted at what this punked up Led Zeppelin with Otis Redding on vocals can do on a stage. Guerrilla warfare just doesn't work as well in a living room. That Zen Guerrilla's albums are still better than 95% of the music released under the label 'rock' provided more sadness about brilliance that could have been than joy. Maybe that is why the band decided to take a little different approach for this album: less sonic assaults, more soul. And it works: 'Shadows On The Sun' is Zen Guerrilla's best album so far. Soul and rock are perfectly in balance on 'Shadows On The Sun'. Songs like 'Smoke Rings' or '5th & Cecil B.' could make you cry in the mosh pit. But there are still plenty of scorching rockers too: just check out 'Inferno' or 'Dirty Mile'. The biggest surprises are 'Evening Sun' and 'Shadows' where country and southern rock influences are added to Zen Guerrilla's palette. A lot of steps forwards, but it still takes only one listen to the live version of 'Fingers' to be convinced of the fact that being there is the best way to experience Zen Guerrilla.
