A band that calls itself Young And Sexy can make you think of a band full of the characters that Bret Easton Ellis describes: beautiful from the outside, ugly from the inside. They're all arrogant bastards walking around with their tans, constantly searching for all kinds of drugs, while being caught in their superficial mind. These are the people who talk about everything, except for those things important in life. They find their "personal strength" in being young and sexy. But on the other hand, these people couldn't have the irony to name their band Young And Sexy, because they're either stupid or cynical. A better band name for these five people from Vancouver should be Cute And Lovely, because that's what the songs are. And because it's always so cute when you hear the boy–girl vocals (hello there, Belle & Sebastian, Apples In Stereo, Mendoza Line!), especially when they can sing. The vocals of Paul Hixon Pittman even remind you of the (quite unique) vocals of Darran Hayman you might know from Hefner. And when they seem to get arrogant by singing "I'm good in bed," this is followed by the polite "but I'll stay with you in the morning." Stand Up For Your Mother is more than a pleasant and poppy compilation of easy-to-digest songs. Even though the supermelodic parts of the album are also the parts you love immediately, there is also space for unexpected directions. Or did you see the a-capella hand-clapping at the end of 'Silent Film Star,' the sudden one-and-a-half minute outburst 'Car Bought for a Son,' or the psychedelic start of 'Last Year's Hopes' coming? And if you want, you can also find some humor on the album with lyrics like "Television, you know I love to turn you on," but that can be expected from a band you shouldn't be looking for in search engines. Young And Sexy is surprising. The way that opener 'Stand Up For Your Mother' starts really peacefully but ends in a pool of sounds, with the trumpet on top of it, is a résumé for the whole. Now just hope that people start to pick this one up.
