This album has been around for quite some months but due to the recent release of the single One Morning In The Springtime I felt it was legitimate to review this record anyway. Nice Days Under Darkest Skies is the fourth record by Dutch folkies Ygdrassil. They play acoustic folk in the singer/songwriter tradition. This album shows a lot of progress when it comes to songwriting, which becomes the most evident in the close harmony vocals. The vocals parts are much better worked out than on any previous album. This benefits the intense sadness and beauty of the songs. Tracks like Dark Meadows To The North and The Slain Man's Door are as beautiful as sadness can be. Other songs like the One Morning in The Springtime and the title track are reminiscent of melancholy 60s folk, like The Pentangle in their classic period. It is only too bad there are a few more uptight songs throughout the album, which sort of disturbs the mood of this record. Although Ygdrassil has already released four albums this one might be considered their first mature record and I sure hope they will not grow old soon.
