The druggy, draggy, Phily-strings-tinged opening of this album,
unsurprisingly called Prelude, is a hint that this album is going to be a
sexy, modern bouquet. The title of the group hints at late '50s jazz. In
both cases, this disc doesn't disappoint. Fender Rhodes and vibes pop up
throughout the album and there are samples and loops-a-plenty for the most
modern, edgy urban warrior.
Julani is a stuttering space excursion, with a hopping bass propelling a
vibey-atmosphere out of the ether and onto terra firma. It then segues
into a cheeky, playful song called Papa. A bit kitschy, the song
reminds one slightly of '70s U.S. television, but the nostalgia doesn't
become cloying.
YNQ is the brainchild of the marvelously named Otis Jackson Jr. But this effort is a true quintet, and there's a sense of a shared "kickin' it." On Angles Without Edges, there's a neat segment where the origins of the band are explored with spoken voice laid against a jazzy backdrop. You get a nice little explanation of the different sounds of various keyboards, as well. Following that is a modern Latin- and Caribbean-tinged number that, again, invokes a '70s vibe. And it's this '70s vibe that permeates the disc, but it's filtered through not only a hip-hop prism, but also through a pair of post-bop shades. There's enough '70s TV theme show cheese to bring a smile to the most jaded, disaffected acid house lover, and a grin to dad's face as he remembers conceiving your older sister with your mom on the sofa and the TV on as background music. There are even moments that remind one of Zappa during his Hot Rats times.
If you want that "jazz-groovin'/pipe-smokin'/I-saw-Coltrane-when-I-was-14/be-careful-with-my-Verv es-don't-scratch-them/this-new-music-don't-have-the-same-soul/it's-just-computer -generated-noise" father of yours to gain an entry into your world of "nappy-cords/strobe-light-reflected/musk-oil-wearin'/nappy-soul-patch-growin'/fr ee-safe-sex-needin'/missed-the-last-tram-again/name-that-sample/why-won't-my-dre ad-grow-in-right" lifestyle, turn him onto this disc, which is sure to bridge the gap nicely. It's a sneaky little disc, this one. It might make you go back and listen to Bud Powell as well. And it'll make you get up and shake your groove thang.
