Black metal!!! Aaaarrrggghhh!!! From Canada!!! Not only is Canada the main distributor of avant-garde and progressive music, with a band like Woods of Ypres the country makes a giant leap towards being one of the most important black metal countries of today.
This self-released EP from the young band Woods of Ypres is a stunning display of atmospheric and melodic black metal. The five songs clock in at just over 30 minutes, and all have amazing guitar melodies. The vocals are divided between the guitarist and the bassist, the first having that typical black metal scream, the second a much more melodic, almost new wave kind of voice. The songs meander between old-school Scandinavian black metal and today's more accessible scene. Luckily, there are no childish themes in the lyrics, and they left the corpse paint buried in the ground. All the songs have a great variety in tempo and atmosphere, but it has to be said that they are a bit alike in structure. Furthermore, the production could be a bit heavier and sharper, but I'm not able to make more negative remarks about this promising band. If Woods of Ypres keeps this up, and doesn't burn any churches in the meantime, they very well could be the next big thing in black metal.
(Editor's note: Woods Of Ypres is the band of Brian McManus, who also writes for us. But before you accuse of us of nepotism: Bas and Brian have never met and hardly know each other. And I do know Bas and the guy is a music fundamentalist who would not have doubted a second about burning down the entire Woods Of Ypres if he'd thought they sucked. If you still feel inclined to send hatemail, send it to me, not to Bas or Brian, for I made the decision to have the CD reviewed by Bas. And I just love a good flamewar...)
