Some bands where their influences on their sleave, Wondermints go one step further and actually put it on record. 'Wonderful World of' is a collection of covers ranging from the fantastic 'Guess I'm dumb' written by Brian Wilson, 'Knowing me, knowing you' by... yes, you guessed right... Abba to the Syd Barrett penned song 'Arnold Layne'. A collection of classics played by a sadly overlooked great band. There is only one song which is not a cover, namely 'Tracy Hide', an old song which already appeared on one of their tapes and on their self-titled CD.
Now most of the time covers are just carbon copies of the original song and therefore don't add anything new. Or at times the new versions have been raped in such a horrible way, it borders on commiting a crime. Can you say Tom Jones & Cardigans with 'Burning down the house'? Oh yes, you can. But not here, the Wondermints not only chose gems, they also did a wonderful job at covering the songs. Letting the songs shine, sparkle and blind you. Yeah yeah yeah, I know, I can't stop raving about this record. But what can I say, it's just that good.
If you are a fan of the band, then it lets you hear what sounds influenced the band. Which is not too hard if you heard their original material. The Wondermints are known for their sixties/seventies inspired music. But never mind, the cover record is a great buy anyway.
If the Wondermints are new to you, then buy this and all the other records. The Wondermints are sadly the Big Star of the nineties. A great band only known to a handful fans (many of them actually being Japanese). Join the small legion of fans and buy now!
