The Emotional Rescue LP is the long-awaited fourth record by Windsor For The Derby. Songs such as Now I Know The Sea really are as comforting as the title of the record leads you to expect, although the songs appear to be detached arrangements. Like David Grubbs’ Rickets & Scurvy, this Windsor For The Derby release is one large sum of mathematical folk. An item on the telly some time ago showed a German painter living in Amsterdam, making paintings on the basis of mathematical formulas. He let his brush be led by numbers. It feels as if Matz and McNeely (the two core members of the band) have used the same kind of philosophy on The Emotional Rescue LP. Eye for detail lets these folk-avantgardists - together with Grubbs - take the genre to the next level. The band from Austin and New York are stretching the idea of a "song" to its outer limits. Acoustic guitars, roaring saxophones, gentle piano playing, and sighing vocals put together in mathematical formulas. There seems to be a contradiction in the compositions: They’re both light and complicated at the same time. It's the choice for breezy instrumentation with the more complex structures. It's the poetry of music; it's underexposed. But, in its rhythm, it's so recognisable and touching. It's abstract music if you like. Find out yourself, if you dare to be challenged
