Another compilation album by Will Oldham. What should I say? More haunting tunes, characteristically sung by the man who calls himself Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy nowadays. The songs are great of course, and probably a lot of fans are quite happy to find these hard-to-find songs on CD. But this record leaves me with mixed feelings. The songs, how beautiful they may be, vary too much in atmosphere, style and sometimes quality too, to make a pleasant listen. This album should be listened to as a single, taking just a few songs at the time. But then again, you’re better off just buying one of his 7 inches if you stumble upon them. Because the very few unreleased tracks on this album are awful sounding livetracks, on which Will has a backing band which sounds as if they never even rehearsed the song they’re playing. The truly heartbreaking singles ‘Gezundheit/Let the wires ring’ and ‘Patience/Take however long you want’ featured here deserve a special mention as one of the highlights on this scrappy compilation.
