The North, Norway to be precise, seems to have to perfect climate for modern, warm-blooded jazz. Especially on Bugge Wesseltoft's Jazzland label are some damn fine artists. The newest fruit on the Jazzland tree is Wibutee, a young band which makes the perfect blend between freeform-jazz and electronics. According to the website, all tracks on 'Eight Domestic Challenges' are in essence free improvisations which were transformed into 'real' songs only in the pre-production phase. The endresult is very impressive: the music isn't recognisable anymore as pure improv, as all the improvs are put into a foundation of shifting electronic layers, under which a very steady and evenly creative base of drums and both electric and double bass is putting down a foundation that is strong enough for a complete orchestra. On top of all this Hakon Kornstad is playing his saxophones and flutes in a style that isn't too far off of John Coltrane's most spiritual episodes. In fact, in the first part of 'First There was Jazz' his playing breathes so much Coltrane that one wonders if this is an outtake of his 'First Meditations' album. This is not a bad thing, to put it mildly. And when the other bandmembers play those impressive African tribal and jungle patterns underneath, one just have to look for a globe to check if Norway isn't some newly discovered and unexplored African country. Wibutee is a very welcome and warm suprise out of a cold country.
