The Dark Ages is the fifth album by this Italian power metal band. Since their debut album in 1995, these guys have received lots of positive reactions from both the local press as well as the local metal fans.
Through the years, White Skull have released a number of successful records and played throughout Europe alongside various major names like U.D.O., Doro, and Grave Digger. In February, 2001, original singer Federica De Boni left the band due to personal problems. He was replaced by an Argentinian singer named Gustavo Gabarró.
The Dark Ages is the first album on which "Gus" is able to showcase his talents. This record is a concept album based on the Middle Ages and on the crimes of the Inquisition. Unfortunately, the promo CD doesn't contain any lyrics, so it's not possible to comment on the story line.
As far as the music is concerned, there isn't much to comment on: White Skull play bombastic, melodic, mid-tempo power metal with lots of keyboards. All twelve tracks on the album contain catchy melodies and are pleasant to listen to. Comparisons that spring immediately to mind (mostly because of the keyboards) are Labyrinth and Nightwish.
But the songs also have a high shout-along level, reminding one somewhat of Manowar. This feeling is only amplified by the background shouts and Gabarró, who, when screaming, sounds a lot like Manowar's Eric Adams. With a sound like this, it's hardly a surprise that White Skull have many fans in Germany.
So, put on your lederhosen, grab your 5-liter beer mug, and turn up your stereo! Mark my words, White Skull will definitely play at Wacken Open Air 2003!
