Man, they sure got it rollin' at Wally's Groove World HQ! They're releasing
on a mad scheme in Antwerp and the good thing is that the infernal pace
doesn't mean that lesser releases squeeze themselves in the admirable
roster. So here we go for a grasp out of the recent releases.
MAYAKU | THE OTHER SIDE OF THE VOLCANO(cd/lp, Wally's Groove
World/News)
Mayaku, Labelboss Koenie's own project, has scrupulously opted for
the dubbed-out and spacey house psychedelics that flourish in the equally
expert Uk hands of the Idjut Boys. That means you can expect loads of
guitar effects, Marius' lazy-spacey live bass and tropical rainforest
sounds by the legion. There's room reserved for sexy downtempo adventures,
smooth electrofunk, West-Coast and progressive tendencies and some funky
tech-house. But it's the fat and sleazy production combined with the
extreme lengths -ranging from 6 to 11 minutes- that turn every new track in
an adventure of its own, mostly due to the fact that they all take plenty
of time to get up to speed and slowly hypnotize you with the groove that
does not stop. We personally were particularly enthused about
'Omnidirectional', a truly epic groove that ensnares you with a superb
violin-bit, tons of percussion and an overall carnival atmosphere, the
previously released 'Aftershock', with its potent techy eighties groove and
the sweaty breaks of 'Bushwalking', that profits once again from Marius'
ultra groovy basslines. But to be honest we couldn't dig up a single miss
on this inventive and energetic debut.
KELVIN | STRIPPER (12", Wally's Groove World/News)
Then there's Kelvin who does wondrous things with his 'Stripper'.
Turning an old Dj Hell-sample into a crazed-out never-ending party groove,
it contains a daring guitar solo and still succeeds in reminding us of 69's
'Rushed', which can't be a bad thing either. Powerful shit.
SIGMA | REMINDER (12", Wally's Groove World/News)
Swirl People's Dimitri de Wever (who's recently signalled in the
neighbourhood of Neon Judge Dirk da Davo -oh those eighties back all over
again!) is one of Belgium's most productive house and techno producers. As
Sigma he serves us three high quality tracks. Me personally couldn't
take the pick between the tech-house of 'Reminder', the acidic Basic
Channel house of 'Concussion', or the powerful percussive deep house of
'Tequila Sunrise'. That usually means a perfect from the volgaJury.
VARIOUS ARTISTS | WALLY'S GROOVE WORLD COMPILATION (cd/lp, Wally's
Groove World/News)
And for good measure Wally's also comes up with the first Wally's Groove
World compilation. It contains mostly debut or early tracks from the above
mentioned Mayaku, Koenie & Frederik (with the Belgian dancefloor classic 'No
Romance'), the prolific duo Swirl People, Pako & Frederik (these days
venturing on Digweed's Bedrock), the ever relaxed-and-relaxing Marius,
newcomers Groove & Kramers and of course Marino Berardi (the man who, two
years on, is releasing on François K.'s Wave, Chicago's Moody and Josh
Wink's Ovum with his first ever release, the stunning 'Nr 10'). And Mayaku
delivers another of those spacey fusionscapes they're so fond of. It's
rather easy to support your local scene when the standards are this
elevated.
