Is jacking beats a desperate act? A sign of terrible insecurity? Plain ignorance? Well, at least I'm sure it's not limited to the world of R&B, where it has apparently become fashionable to the point of being mandatory to have new tracks resemble Sisqo's "Thong Song" in one way or another. The indierock have similar dilemmas; who should we sound like in order to get noticed? A twisted train of thought which, of course, defeats its purpose. Enter Unisex, a band from the Midlands (UK), consisting of former members of the Telescopes. Not unlike a lot of lesser known UK bands, its two main songwriters, Stephen Lawrie and Nick Hemming have what I can only describe as an unnatural , just plain scary obsession with, I bet you guessed it already, Radiohead circa The Bends/ OK Computer. Yes, the production is OK, sure the instrumentation is great but the songs, man! The songs! It's like playing "name that tune", only a bit different (and just as fun!). Here in The Netherlands advertisers use tracks for TV commercials that sound like known songs in order to pay less for the rights. A Portishead knock-off for a car, faux DJ Shadow for beer, a "Karma Police"-sound-a-like selling insurance. So, you see there actually IS a market for Unisex besides that of the odd entrapped or misguided recordbuyer here and there. No, thanks·
