I don't need to see, I'll paint it black. If the Rolling Stones appropriated the blues, then Modest Mouse stole it right back from under Mick's Gucci loafers. Rightfully so. It belongs on the porch of a dilapitated house amidst empty Budweiser cans, not in a 17th Century castle, somewhere in the south of France. Descending from the classic Moon & Antarctica, Modest Mouse mainman Isaac Brock teams up with Brian Deck and Tim Rutili (of Califone and Red Red Meat), Pall Jenkins (of Black Heart Procession), and a few others. Apparently, Ugly Cassanova is the pen name of a certain Edgar Graham, an obsessive Modest Mouse fan, who joined the band on tour and then suddenly disappeared. Where the drugs worked previously in Modest Mouse — stretching out the sound all over the American skyline — now they have taken a back seat. But they haven't evaporated altogether. There're highlights and there're downsides, just like every emotional rollercoaster. Some of the upsides are the acoustic Cat Faces and the disco dancing. Things I don't remember. Ice On The Sheets, with its Ween-minus-the-pastiche indie rock, drags on much too long. No one wants to be stuck in an alcoholic vicious circle for 6:33 minutes. There doesn't seem to be any coherence in the record, but then whose mind really goes from A to B in a logical progression? Isaac is depressingly insightful, and it shows in the lyrics. He might drink himself into a stupor, but he still can't escape the realization that "You'll rust and not belong so much." Despite (and because) of all the software warpness and kettle percussion, it feels disconnected from the rest of the indie rock crowd. But then, who wants to sit next to Andrew WK? Isaac may party hard, but the next morning he wakes up to the harsh reality of his bleak life and (thankfully, for us) a recording machine.
