Recently I received a package with albums, and the first selection before listening is that of judging it by its cover. So I saw this one from Tricolor and decided to let it rest a while, because it was damn ugly. Some time later, the albums with better looking covers were already reviewed, and I decided to give the Tricolor album a spin. So, it wasn't nearly five seconds on its way and I already thought: "fuck, this sounds good!". I gave the cover a second look, and there it was: Jeff Parker on guitar! Jeff Parker is ofcourse a member of Tortoise, Isotope 217 and Boxhead Ensemble, but in this powerjazz trio he fires his typical guitarwork onto a playground with David Pavkovic (also Boxhead Ensemble) on drums and Tatso Aoki from the Fred Anderson Trio on bass. Tricolor makes their own version of modern freejazz, with beautiful minimalistic guitarparts by Jeff Parker, who could have created a far bigger role for himself than he did. But he didn't, his playing is always very tasteful, and he leaves more than enough space for the other musicians to express themselves. If you only knew David Pavkovic from his work with Boxhead Ensemble, you'll be in for a total suprise: that man plays some excellent drums! Minimal playing where it is required, and full-on jazz expressionism where it's possible. Underneath Tatso Aoki plays tremendously on his double bass, laying a rocksolid foundation. 'Nonparticipent + Milk' is a live recording, and it's from such a quality that you can only regret that you weren't there yourself earlier this year in The Hothouse in Chicago.
