"Experimental boyband music." There is no other way to describe 'Club Nouveau', the new album of former punk band Travoltas. They already were big Beach Boys fans, and for their latest album they have added 80s synthipop to the mix, meanwhile almost totally abandoning their punk roots. And 80s pop + 60s choirs = 90s boyband sound. Singer Perry has the right voice too. Only the songs have a sort of experimental edge to their poppiness. This is probably the Beach Boys influence, but despite the four months of recording in five studios, 'Club Nouveau' is not the 'Pet Sounds' of the new century. The best comparison to this strange album is Daft Punk's 'Discovery': completely wrong in some places ('Dreams' and 'Song for the Jetset'), very catchy in others ('Do It Again', 'Break Out'), but most of the time both. It's neither a good nor a bad album. It's a different album. It's Experimental Boyband Music.
