Britney Spears. No, even better: Coca-Cola. A pitch-black, extremely sweet soft drink that contains extracts from the coca leave and has the pH of hydrochloric acid. There always has to be some unsettling quality to anything that comes from "The South", that almost mythological part of the United States. Spears herself has become her image by years of superstar training, and all that remains of her is an emotional and spiritual void that sooner or later just has to be filled by a religious extremist or prescription drugs, the next frightening step in the evolution of the human species, the homo entertainmentus
Melissa Swingle, at least, is good old-fashioned Southern Gothic. With a shaky voice, Trailer Bride's dark-haired frontwoman never sings about love, but solely about obsession in a musical landscape that the band itself describes as "hillbilly noir", a brooding combination of banjos and reverb. Only 16 Horsepower apostle Dave Eugene Edwards sounds more intense. With that band you've got the best reference, although Trailer Bride sound more traditional.
Opener Jesco tells the story of a dancer who turns on all women in his town. But "Jesco, you know, has been to prison.". Of course Jesco's been to prison. No self-respecting southern woman would've been interested in him otherwise. After all, if it ain't twisted and a little unsettling, it ain't no good. High Seas is twisted and a little unsettling.
