Germans To Rococo Rot and New Yorker I-Sound decided it was time for a joint release. Now, the Germans are (more or less) well known for their electronic postrock (well, sort of), and the American is a turntablist who specializes in electronically treated dub and such. Apart from being electronic they don't have that much in common, so this was not a predictable collaboration. It is a good one though. I saw To Rococo Rot a couple of years ago (as a support for Mogwai), and they made some nice sounding soundscapes without leaving a lasting impression. Possibly I-Sound provided some extra motivation or inspiration, because 'Music is a hungry ghost' is a great album. No puristic postrock here, no endless soundscapes, no selfindulgent showing off on their equipment. Nothing like this, merely beautiful and compact (not a song over five minutes) instrumental songs with nice grooves and great melodies. They created a perfect blend of electronic manipulation and live played instruments like a bassguitar and a violin (by Alexander Balanescu). This is a superb album, and the music is just as accessible for people who are into the avantgarde and IDM as it is for the more moderate alternative music listener. And that is an achievement that is quite rare for music in general and this genre in particular.
