Even without listening 'Emerald Liquid Odyssey', just by looking at the sleeve of this album, you could guess Thumlock isn't an ordinary stonerrock band. Opening track 'Rockin' Course' is one of the few 'usual' stonerrock tracks, it immediately shows the Australian quartet does know how to rock, but the rest of the songs are a lot more inventive. The title track, 'Emerald Liquid Odyssey', for example, reminds me of 'The End' of The Doors. Not that it's really identical to the masterpiece, but it has the same feel, it almost leads you into some state of trance. More songs on this album cause this same effect, even when the band's playing at full power. I don't know, but I can actually hear some Celtic influences worked into their music and I think that is, besides Ben's excellent vocals, the main reason 'Emerald Liquid Odyssey' sounds so laidback. With 'Emerald Liquid Odyssey' (their debut full length!) Thumlock proves that more and more bands in this genre start paying more attention to renewal and diversity, and that's a development I really support.
