Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 (THUL 282) have not only succeeded at coming up with both a long band and long album name, but they have also succeeded in confounding this particular reviewer with an album of conflicting junctures, and that's just about the sum of its parts. It's obvious that THUL 282 have tried to move away from straightforward rock and have embraced several musical genres along the way. But it doesn't help that all the good work they gain in the verses of most songs is thrown away during the choruses, which are rather by-the-number and formulaic; it seems as though one band wrote the verses and another the chorus. I have to admit that this is not always the case: There are also songs where the roles of the chorus and the verses are reversed. In between, THUL 282 waver from lo-fi to demonic contagious atmospheres, and from 'Faith No More' jokes to noise rock. Last track 'He Keeps Himself Fed' may not be characteristic in its length (it's more than 10 minutes), but it is typical of the pattern found in 10 of the 14 songs: tension-building instrumentals interrupted by deliberately samey vocals, resulting in a loss of tension that was built up so thoughtfully; the concept of the song becomes blurred; and the listener loses attention. But this lasts only until the listener restarts the record and finds out that (around) the middle of 'Celebrity Avalanche' features some great (half) songs like 'Holy Ghost,' 'Everything's Impossible,' and 'El Cerrito.'
