This 7-piece ska-orchestra from NYC is back again with another brilliant album. This is their 5th album out so far and their 4th album out on Hellcat-records. Their first release was on Moon-ska records. Through the years there weren't any strange musical changes, so if you're familiar with the Slackers you know what you're gonna get. The album is exactly what I expected it would be, and that's a ska-styled mixture of jazz, soul, reggae and blues. 'Wasted Days' it's called this time and it's another skankaround masterpiece with 15 new songs and one coversong. I must confess that I don't like ska that much, because I always think that's it the same tune over and over again, but I never have this feeling with the Slackers. They stole my heart when I saw them on stage a couple of years ago. Their live-shows are known to be superb and all the good things you hear about their live-acts are all true. The Slackers also have a live album out called 'Live at Ernesto's' which is, in my eyes, the best ska-album ever. A studio album could never catch their live-performance on CD and that's a pity, but "Wasted Days"comes close this time. The record is filled with the best ska-tunes around and it will have you dancing around for days. This records has a couple of instrumental songs and they are all quite good, but I don't like instrumental songs that much so I just listened to them once or twice. The Slackers have two singers and their voices are very different, but the combination is brilliant. The singer and keyboardplayer Victor "the Wix" Ruggiero has kind of a whiskey and cigarette-drenched voice, while Marq 'Q" lyn has more of a clean Jamaican-like voice. My favourite song on the record is 'The Nurse', but it's hard to choose a favourite, because they are all so darn good. Very nice is 'the sermon' where they preach about having fun, doing whatever you want and most of all shaking your ass. Also very nice is the cover song 'dead or alive'. I've always been a sucker for Bon Jovi songs so I must say, even though it's a good cover, I like the original better. If you like The Skatalities, The Heptones, Hepcat or just ska in general you must get your hands on this one. I think it's the best ska-release so far this year! So roll up the rug and put on your dancing shoes! The Slackers are back in town.
