Blessed with a roommate living in Edinburgh for college studies, I was lucky enough to receive these two CDs, and I can't leave them unmentioned, even though these might be hard to come by via import channels.
The Sick Anchors are a three-piece featuring Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai and Aidan Moffat of Arab Strap. Their first offering, a three-song EP, contains cover versions only, "beauteous soundscapes to remedy the weariest hearts" as the sleeve tells us. Recorded in Glasgow, these songs are: Whole Again, as known from the Atomic Kitten version, Bill Is Dead by The Fall, and The Mills Brothers’ You Always Hurt the One You Love. No deafening walls of noise as known from Mogwai concerts, but rather subtler and hushed instrumentation as normally applied by Arab Strap. On the last song, Moffat even hints at a Tom Waits-style of cabaret bar singing. This short CD makes for a very nice listen and is yet another superb example of Glasgow/Edinburgh-area collaborations. This one makes me very eager to hear more from the enterprise.
Quiet Violence by Arab Strap was a gig-only freebie given to the attending crowd of one of three acoustic Arab Strap concerts in Edinburgh. Stuart Braithwaite opened for Arab Strap on this occasion, and he even played a song off of the Sick Anchors EP, joined onstage by Aidan. This six-track CD (limited to 800 copies) with old and new material by Arab Strap contains a rather unheard and surprising new use of additional cello, along with fingerpicked guitar and Aidan’s dark, warm voice. Lyrically cursing, drinking, fucking: The full monty is still present, but this too is one of the charms of this chronicler of the dark side of the 24 hours of the day. With far less romantic and more down-to-earth, honest, and true-to-life (or is it merely wishful thinking?) lyrics when compared to Stuart Staples of Tindersticks, this CD still shifts Arab Strap a little step into their direction. It’s a fragile sound, personal, up close, natural, and very much so a valuable addition to the Arab Strap catalogue. Look it up, try to get a hold of it, light a candle, stay up late, and sink away in this warm "loch" of Scotland’s finest.
