'13 Smashing Surf Hits ... and more' says the nice cover of Ghent's the Revelaires' debut 'High Tide'. Indeed, there are 15 tracks on the album, all of them covers. And some of them very unoriginal: Do we really need yet another version of 'Peter Gunn' or 'Hawaii Five-O'? Why not? 'High Tide' is far from an essential addition to your record collection, but it is great fun. The Revelaires' tight playing and nice arrangements, although limited to the classic surf two guitars/bass/drums format with the occasional added saxophone, make a great soundtrack for a California-style beach party. And their sound often seems to have just a bit more bite than the originals. So until the Revelaires release an album filled with the great original tracks they're undoubtely capable of writing, we'll keep dancing on the beach to 'High Tide'.
