Bursurk Records has found yet another way to stick their grubby little hands in my pocket.
If John Davis from Superdrag and Ben Folds moved to Vermont, were married and had a baby, it would have come out James Menderhall, the piano tickling lead singer of The Prom. I don't know why they decided to send him into the world with a different last name than both of his Dads, but they did. Maybe it was an attempt to give their sweet darling boy the strength to be unique and never to follow suit. In a black rim indie scene where old school garage rock clogs the cd racks, The Prom offers a cool fresh breeze in the thick summer air. With catchy pop hooks and tortured vocals The Prom have come to the kitchen table with their first full-length offering, Under the Same Stars. Pass the salt little Jimmy. The Prom is James Mendenhall on piano and lead vocals (and a slew of other instruments), Joel Brown on the skins (and a crap load of other instruments), and David Broecker on the bass (and a cold slaw of other instruments). One of the major kickers is that they all take part in the vocal work and that is even more impressive than the smorgasbord of instruments.
I reviewed this disc on the way to work on a stormy Friday morning super tired and a little hung-over,...bad move. The first 3 tracks, Under the Same Stars, Living in the Past, and Guarantees Aren't Easy should come with that surgeon generals warning about operating heavy machinery. Themes like losing your mother to sickness and misinterpreted drunken phone calls litter the first ten minutes of the disc. These slow jam ballads force you to fight off the urge to pull over your car and weep about your past. Although there are some real quiet gems, the slow core overload can be a bit unappetizing.
The strength of this collection of songs comes later on with dope joints like, The Same Complaints and the dope-est The City Gets Lonely. Interesting instrumentation and lyrics like, I've got some money/you got a pack of cigarettes Together we'll mend our wounds/and make fun of it, pull you back into the road and set you on cruise control. When I pulled into the office parking lot I realized I forgot my lunch and matching socks. What I did not forget was the fact that Under the Same Stars was healthy first attempt at a full-length record. There were some small dead spots in the track list but the overall message was well received. My advice to James and company would be to keep kicking out the jams and keep away from the dramamine. Two snaps and a twist.
