America has got a new president, and music has got a new CD of the Presidents of the USA. After their million-selling self-titled debut, follow-up 'II', and b-sides compilation 'Pure Frosting', the Presidents called it quits in 1997. In one term (for a real American president) the ex-members concentrated on their hobbies (like bike-racing), work (investor in a cafe), and other musical projects (e.g. the Pin-Ups and the Giraffes). In early 1999, Dederer, Finn, and Ballew teamed up with Sir Mix-A-Lot to form the band Subset. They released a song through MusicBlitz Records called 'Addicted to the Fame' and toured the west coast of America in early 2000. During this time they recorded one song as 'The Presidents'. Blood was thicker than water, and the original threesome of the Presidents of the USA signed a deal with MusicBlitz for an album. Now, the beginning of a new term for a new president, the musical presidents (And then I do not mean Bill and his saxophone) are back as well with 'Freaked Out and Small'. With this CD they return to their pointy pop-rock as presented on their debut. The Presidents sound more energetic and powerful than on 'II', except maybe for the dry-humoured 'Deathstar' and the (surprisingly) serious last song 'Heading Out'. The first single, 'Tiny Explosions' has a real rock'n'roll piano, and in songs like 'Jazzguy' and 'Superstar' the Presidents remind me of Frank Black's solo outings. Joining the threesome on bass on the song 'I'm Mad' is ex-Guns'n'Roses bass player Duff McKagan. On the whole, 'Freaked Out and Small' is a good CD, but not world-shocking. It's just uncomplicated and fun music to listen to, like we know from the Presidents. This is pop at its most minimalist.
