The fall of 2001 will mark the return of the Drexciyan cruisers after almost two years of silence following the excellent album 'Neptune's Lair' on German imprint Tresor. In December, the Drexciya crew will release a new 12" on Tresor. Meanwhile, crew member Gerald Donald presents this excellent album on Warp. Way back in the 90s, Donald was responsible for the 'Elektroids' EPs on the Warp label. This time around he goes for a full album with eight tracks. Although the typical Drexciya sound is all over the album, 'Lifestyles of the Laptop Café' can't really be compared to the Drexciya album on Tresor in 1999. The music Donald presents here is a lot more intimate, and the pace is a lot more laidback than on any given Drexciya release. Instead of an energetic drive, you get an almost melancholic and very deep sound that keeps sending shivers down your spine. Just check out 'Moonlight Rendezvous', 'You Said You Want Me', the almost cheesy 'Sunrays', or the very new wave-ish 'Let Me Be Me'. In my opinion, this is one of the best electro albums this year. Electronic wizardry at its best and a nice change from the electronic mayhem from the likes of Anthony Rother and DJ Godfather that is dominating the electro scene these days.
