Used To Fuck People Like You In Prison / Suburban) And yet another great rock album from Sweden. All the bubblegum pop produced there (the producer behind 'N Sync and Britney Spears is Swedish) seems to create a counterforce in the form of inspiration for great rock 'n' roll songs. The bandname suggests spacey/psychedelic stonerrock, but The Mushroom River Band is more into down to earth grooves at medium-fast tempos. Spice, the singer, is also does the vocals for Spiritual Beggars, and that gives a good indication of what to expect. In general Spiritual Beggars sound more sophisticated, but TMRB compensates for this with pure groove power. And guitarist Anders Linusson doesn't only come up with some great riffs ('Addicted' easily makes it to my top 5 of 2000), he isn't too bad in the solo department either. Bass player Alexander Sekulovski understands that in this kind of music the bass has to buzz and drummer Christian Rockstrom plays somewhat busier than usual, often giving the music a bit of a jazzy or tribal swing. Spice does not sing as well as on the Spiritual Beggars record, probably because of a smaller recording budget, but still leaves the vast majority of stonerrock vocalists far behind (Which brings me to the question of why so many stonerrock bands have crappy singers. Contact me if you know.) And if all this did not convince you, the fact that if you own this album you'll be the only person in your neighbourhood with an album that features a jaw harp should.
