The Microphones are Phil Elvrum and friends. They play "noisy pop sounds" that are, musically, mostly influenced by the landscapes of their natural habitat: the sea, the sky, and the mountains surrounding Fidalgo Island, near Seattle, USA. An inspiring undertaking that can lead to interesting music.
Song Islands is a compilation of all the Microphones' vinyl singles previously released on several independent labels. This 22-track collection traces the development of the band through material that dates from the time period of their first album Tests (1999) through their latest album The Glow, Pt. 2 (2001).
The overall atmosphere on this compilation is melancholic. Drums and guitar sound monotonous, especially in Drum Bass Dream, and there's not much change of melody within most songs. Are the landscapes that depressive? The beautiful pictures on their homepage (www.krecs.com/Microphones/index.html) show the opposite . . .
But there are more friendly and intimate moments as well. Songs like Moon Moon, I Lost My Wind, and Phil Elvrum's Will have an acoustic feeling that does attract. And when the intimate vibe meets the noisy melancholy in The Moon (Version), things get really interesting. This song with horns and piano has a hypnotic atmosphere that does create a beautiful landscape.
But sadly, the greater part shows the same grey skies, mountains and sea. Let's hope the weather is gonna change soon.
