And yet another great garage release from Sweden. It is getting boring. Mojo has already said about The Hives: "Forget about The Strokes and The White Stripes, this is what the new breed really say" and the band's 'Your New Favourite Band' compilation went gold in the UK, so the backlash can't be far away. The (International) Noise Conspiracy will be the next in line to get big. What Swedish premium quality rock do you have to listen to then, being the elitist underground snob you are? There are still always The Nomads and The Chronics. And now you can add The Maggots to that list. They're on Bad Afro, which is much hipper than Burning Heart. And you won't have to be afraid they get big. Maggots singer/guitarist Måns P. Månsson bought his first Sonics album when he was 16 in 1982 and he and bass player Steffen Hellström were in Wylde Mammoths, one of the first bands to sign to the legendary Crypt Records. In other words: The Maggots are old and the traces of all those years of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle are clearly visible in their not exactly made for MTV faces. They don't even have a website! How underground can you get? The music is really good though. Not as good as The Hives or T(I)NC, but only by a tiny fraction. Seems like a small price to pay for underground cred.
The Maggots have an extremely convincing 1969 punk sound, with snotty vocals, jangly guitars that burst into messy solos, melodic bass lines, pianos that keep hammering one note, background vocals that go "Aaaaaahhhhhh", songs with the name of the band in them ('The Maggot Man', 'I Wanna Be Your Maggot') and lyrics full of double entendres at the level of "I wanna be your maggot baby, I'm gonna make you squirm" or "Tried to raise Titanic, but it wasn't big enough. She wanted the Eiffel tower, but she couldn't get on top." Of course this is more a singles than an album band, best enjoyed one 2 minute song at the time from scratchy vinyl, but with killer tracks like 'Leave Me Alone', 'Gonna Make You Pay' and 'I Wanna Be Your Maggot' on it, 'This Condition Is Incurable' sort of plays like a singles collection anyway. The Maggots rock. They're certain to make you squirm.
