The Jupiter Project is a relatively new band from the States. Jonny Pape and Sue Boyer formed the band in 1999. Along the way of becoming a real rock band, they went through a lot of different drummers. But then one day, they decided not to be a standard rock band anymore. So the drums stopped, but the Jupiter Project didn't. From that moment on, all beats made were electronic. Knowing this, maybe you can understand why they pretend to make a fusion of modern rock and electronic pop music.
I Can Make You Try is a six-track EP and is their first release as a two-piece. Only available for promotional use and for purchase at their concerts, this is still a very good opportunity to hear something from this new techno-pop/rock band. And in my opinion, this is really a very good start. In the six songs they've recorded, it's very clear they know how to make their music. The beats are often trip-hop-ish, but remain simple; they sound as if they were made by a real person, so they do not rule or overwhelm the rest of the music. As they say themselves: "They are not to impress the audiences with its rhythmic feats." They're beats are purely there for the support of the guitar and vocal parts. The electric guitars used are simple but good — all very basic lines with an occasional different sound to them. Both band members do the vocals, to a very surprising effect. Jonny Pape's vocals sound very much like Michael Stipe's, although they are a bit rougher and a little less melodious. Sue Boyer sings a bit more plainly and is a more a background singer. But when they sing together they make a very nice combination. The groovy bass guitar (very well done by Boyer) completes the sound.
To describe the whole EP: It is basic, sometimes even minimalist, rock music with electronic beats that often sound like slowed-down, trip-hop beats. They definitely don't go with the flow of today's rock and pop music. They've created their own sound. It's too bad the recording lasts only twenty minutes and contains only six tracks. I want more!
