"Last century promised so much, like cheap salvation through rock'n'roll
Last century promised so much, like a million new ways to save our souls
Last century promised so much, but we are still here waiting for some kind of reward
Last century promised so much, but here we are unsatisfied and bored"
So you thought teenage angst was just a phase you have to get through? You're so wrong. According to the rock'n'roll commandos of The (International) Noise Conspiracy, this existential angst is the product of "the global fear factory", one of the ways in which capitalism keeps us down. So it's time for 'A New Morning, Changing Weather'. Whatever you think of T(I)NC's political ideas, you can't accuse them of merely producing slogans and only pointing out problems, but offering no solutions. There's an essay in the CD booklet that explains their ideas and a long list of suggested reading material. Another thing T(I)NC cannot be accused of is making bad music. Under the motto "take action, take aim, and take some slick shoes" they again offer an irrestistible shot of garage soul. In comparison with their previous effort, 'Survival Sickness', 'A New Morning, Changing Weather' is more rhythm-driven. The music is more experimental and multi-layered too, with guitars that create noisy soundscapes, howling organs, and jazz saxophones that rip you right open. The first impact of 'ANM, CW' is therefore a bit less than the more accessible and dancefloor-aimed 'Survival Sickness'. As usual, however, after a few listens the more complex album turns out to have more stamina. And 'ANM, CW' still is a better dance record than the majority of what is reviewed in our Beats section. Just try to sit still when singer Dennis Lyxzén requests to "turn on your lovelights and let them shine on me" in 'A Northwest Passage' or bemoans how capital is pimping him in 'Capitalism Stole My Virginity'. You can't. So you might as well go to the nearest concert venue to watch the same Lyxzén put on a performance like Iggy Pop in his best days. "Strike the match and baby clench your fist, 'cause here comes a party that we don't want to miss!"
