The 'Fucked Up' part of the title of The Immortal Lee County Killers debut probably everyone can agree on. What Chetley "Cheetah" Weise and Doug "The Boss" Sherrard recorded in Lee County, Alabama is more an attempt to deconstruct music than to play it. The 'Blues' part is already questionable. But ok, if T-Model Ford and R.L. Burnside would have been 40 years younger and somebody would have put enough amphetamines in their moonshine they might have sounded like The Immortal Lee County Killers. But is the album 'Essential'? The Boss hits a solid beat. Nothing wrong there. Cheetah is a great guitarist. He makes his guitar sound like it has been possessed by an entire Pandora's box of demons. He's a sort of Jackson Pollock among guitarists: it seems like he's doing just some random stuff, but the end result is raw beauty. Now the vocals. You might have been wondering where those nicknames come from. Judging from the band photos on the CD, The Boss is called The Boss because he looks like somebody you'd call The Boss. Cheetah on the other hand doesn't seem very fast. In fact he looks a bit chubby. And he doesn't play Yngwie Malmsteen-style licks, so the name cannot be derived from his guitar playing either. But when he starts singing everything becomes clear: Chetley Weise is nicknamed Cheetah because he sounds like one of these animals in heat. You could also describe his vocal style with "drunk white kid trying to imitate Howlin' Wolf rather unsuccesfully". A third way would be to say that he sucks. So the 'Essential' part of 'The Essential Fucked Up Blues' is only true as long as Weise keeps his mouth shut. Luckily that is about half of the time. For the other half you'll just have to ignore the drunk who's shouting through the concert. As a fan of this type of music you should be used to doing that.
