Anyone halfway familiar with the ins and outs of British English vernacular will know that 'to go to the Gents' basically means relieving yourself in a lavatory facility. Yes, we mean the toilet.
Luckily, the quartet calling themselves The Gents have their tongues firmly implanted in cheek (no pun intended), and the three songs on this, their debut single, ooze not only the hookiest, catchiest melodies this side of S Club 7 (much less irritating, these), but also show a penchant for off-the-wall humour.
YEAH TIMES NINE kicks things off, and it's a cheeky little bugger of a number right off the mark. Treacle as a sexual aid, intercourse with cousins... The poppy music most definitely belies the lyrical undertones here. The problem is that you'll catch yourself humming or - God forbid! - singing the song in public, which is sure to earn you a few curious looks.
JUST DESSERTS takes things down a slight notch, but both it and ROMFORD - complete with authentic London marketplace noise ambience - are just as stunningly tuneful and bright.
The Gents' YEAH TIMES NINE PLUS TWO is a very surprising debut indeed. Surprisingly good.
