"We know that we're just a bunch of schmucks. We can't play for shit and sure as hell can't sing, but for some reason you guys show up and make this whole thing work." Singer/bassist Ken Casey is a little bit too hard on his band, but it's true that the audience plays an important role in the live shows of the Dropkick Murphys. And when the show takes place on St. Patrick's Day in their hometown Boston, you know the response of the audience will be enthusiastic. The band decided to bring out the recordings of that particular gig, resulting in an almost integral registration of a party hosted by the boys from Boston. The CD lasts almost 75 minutes, making it the lengthiest album of the Dropkick Murphys to date. In those five quarters of an hour, the band presents a blend of songs derived from their four studio albums, but of course, the emphasis lies on their latest, and most successful, album Sing Loud, Sing Proud!, which is represented with ten songs. Other songs include live favorites like Finnegan's Wake, The Gang's All Here, and Curse Of A Fallen Soul, as well as a Creedence Clearwater Revival cover (Fortunate Son) and traditionals like The Wild Rover (their new single) and Amazing Grace. All brought with a lot of enthusiasm and energy.
The live recordings also have some downsides. At the beginning of the CD, the sound needs some adjustments (bagpipes are too hard, mandolin too soft), and the band has to warm up. But this changes within a few songs. After listening to this CD, it also becomes clear that Al Barr should stick to the more punk and hardcore-minded songs, because his singing voice isn't always that clear. Fans, on the other hand, shouldn't take the microphone at all. It's not helping the band (the fans are almost always singing out of key), and surely isn't a contribution to the beauty of the song. But the enthusiasm the band displays on this CD overrules these minor points. This is an open invitation to see one of their shows. I can recommend it!
