Garage punk. It isn't tuneful. In fact, it's been described as "dirty, grimy, sleazy, angry, menacing, and just flat-out ugly" all in one breath. But when it's the music's attitude that gets you high, who the hell cares.
D4's new album 6Twenty isn't pretty. A fact the Auckland, New Zealand foursome should be proud of. Instead, it's a hot and horny twelve-song debut, which should be a favourite with all who attended Rock 'n' Roll High School.
Fast, loose, and looser, 6TWENTY's best original moments include two-minute hedonistic endeavours Rock'N'Roll Motherfucker, the album's opening track Party, and Running On Empty. And their covers of Johnny Thunders' Pirate Love, Scavengers' Mysterex, and Guitar Wolf's Invader Ace are also of equal kick-ass quality. While Pirate Love and Mysterex lyrics fall perfectly into the LP's non-stop gabba about "girls" and rebellion, D4's delivery of Invader Ace includes an awesome cock rock guitar solo.
Happily, The D4 don't take themselves seriously, which makes their simple anarcho-teen ballads — even weak ones like Little Baby and Rebekah — easy to pogo to. Emerging from a musical mosh pit of influences, including the Ramones, the Stooges, and Iron Maiden, 6Twenty is 40 minutes of bratty decadence with random injections of OTT metal guitar.
Frighteningly easy to play over and over again, addiction to this Kiwi version of garage punk is ensured.
