A bit late, but somehow this album got overlooked despite the fact that it is a sort of follow-up to the Oblivians' 'Play 9 Songs With Mr. Quintron', one of the best albums of all time. After that album that band split up and Jack and Greg Oblivian reformed the Compulsive Gamblers, who also include 3 other members. >From opening tracks 'The Way I Feel About You', written and sung by Greg, and 'Pepper Spray Boogie', where Jack handles those duties, it becomes clear that the Oblivian boys still now how to write 100% pure rock 'n' roll classics. The songs may lack the divine quality of the '9 Songs' material, but they're comparable to the best material on 'Popular Favorites'. 'Whole Lotta Woman' and 'Negative Jerk' are of more of the same great quality material. But then it goes wrong. 'Stop & Think It Over' is a sort of post British Invasion, more melodic track, that is troubled by the fact that Greg may be a great singer, but not when it comes to Paul McCartney type melodies. There is another more poppy song on the album, a cover, called 'Your Happiness', and two country songs, 'Wait A Bit Joe' and 'Two Thieves' that suffer from the same problem: they are actually pretty good songs, but the Compulsive Gamblers are not that good at performing them. And that's a shame, because 'Rock 'n' Roll Nurse', the best track of the album, shows what greatness they are capable of when they stick to performing rock 'n' roll.
