The Cheese Detective Agency is Sheffield-born Nick Smith, who has been
living in the Netherlands for about seven years now. As a member of the
Dutch Breakz community, he released a track (Everything) on a compilation
CD issued by Reload Magazine, as well as one on the first Dutch Breakz
compilation (Fatal).
The Cheese Detective's sound is quite unique; I'd even go as far as to call
it "odd," but in a good way. He mixes quirky sounds and cartoonesque
melodies with beefy, down- and mid-tempo breakbeats, like a chilled-out
version of Jacknife Lee or something.
On this self-released mini album we find seven tracks that have that quirky
sound in common, but are fairly diverse at the same time. We hear
reggae-ish, slowmo breakbeat with kinda-roaring-twenties-sounding vocal
samples in Lucky; brass and double bass stabs in Flooded; strings in Check
Point; and Disney-like melodies in Needed Your Freak. Then comes the
slowmo drum 'n' bass track Chemical Weapons I, with its threatening intro
and haunting sounds, followed by Chemical Weapons II, which has a more
"traditional" drum 'n' bass rhythm and big bass lines, in true Smith &
Mighty fashion. The concluding cut Stormy Lullaby is a beatless,
atmospheric track, reminiscent of Cocteau Twins but with industrial sounds
in the background.
The Cheese Detective Agency sound is like that slogan from a certain Dutch
soda pop brand: a bit weird, but very tasty. The music could do with some
more vocals though, but word has it Mr. Smith is working on that. You can
check him out at the upcoming Dance Valley festival in Amsterdam, where
he'll be playing a set with DJ Bounce and vocalist Sara Jay (of Massive
Attack fame).
