It's been quite a while since we last heard from The Breeders. Sure, the hit album Last Splash, featuring the mega-seller Cannonball, was followed by some new projects and a lot of gossip surrounding the twin sisters Deal, but now the new album has been released: Title TK.
Apart from the catchy hit Cannonball, I never liked The Breeders' songs. With this album, however, the more mature sound is very attractive. Recorded in all analog with Steve Albini, the songs have a raw, direct, and live feel. A beautiful, mesmerizing, rather arty sleeve design adds to the perception that the problems have been resolved and the silliness of the earlier records has been surpassed as the ladies move into their thirties.
Back on track as siblings and with a new lineup to back them up, The Breeders sisters' latest album has a strange Velvet Underground undertone to it. Stripped down to the bare essentials, The Breeders seem to be holding back a lot of tensions and energy. Power seeking a way out but confined in the song structures makes for a very good and tense listen. The Breeders on the brakes are very enjoyable. The opening trilogy of quite coolish ballads, with duet singing on top of a throbbing bass, set to a nice melodic flow, is halted by the fourth track: The She, a rather noisy experimental composition. This leads to a threesome of more rock-oriented songs, with the same hypothermia coolness; the tension mounts . . . Full On Idle releases some of it in an up-tempo, groovy, almost country rhythm. But the next tracks put the veil back on or apply frenzy in a short, Sonic-Youth-type atonal outburst. At the very end of this album, T And T is the prelude to a true climax in Huffer, the only real rocker reminiscent of the old Breeders. The Breeders are back. They rocked De Melkweg in Amsterdam, and will be one of the highlights of the upcoming Lowlands Festival. Title TK is their best album: more mature, full of great songs, and an amazing new sound. Probably one of the best come-back records in a long time!
