This is an order: Go to your local record store this instant, and ask for 'How I Learned To Stop Worrying' by The Bigger Lovers. No questions. Just do it. Now. Yes, it's that good.
Hey, lovers of melodic powerpop, casual admirers of a good and hummable tune, The Bigger Lovers have arrived to make your day! So drenched with irresistible hooks and sing-along moments is this debut by the Philadelphian four-piece, one can only wonder where they'll end up going next.
One addictive melody follows the next on these eleven tracks, starting with the aptly-titled opener 'Catch & Release': The listener is entrapped in a harem, where the subservient ladies have all been cast under a spell and transformed into perfect pop songs. The ghost of Big Star wafts at the edges of the den, and Teenage Fanclub make a cameo appearance. Hell, even old-timer Reg Presley has managed to summon his Troggs out of (semi-)retirement on 'I'm Here', complete with harmony vocals that would even catch those Byrds crying. And 'Threadbare'... Words fail to describe the joy the listener gets when listening to this song (not a good thing for a journalist, but hell - rational thought has long left the building when listening to this album).
This band doesn't give a damn about being fashionable. Oh no, they're in it for the long haul, and these timeless nuggets prove them right.
Anybody not seduced by tunes on 'How I Learned To Stop Worrying' better go check for a pulse. These are the best hooks this writer has heard in ages.
