Its funny... When I got this CD, I don't think I asked for extra
cheese.... and yet this one is dripping with it.
With their self-titled debut, The Big Collapse offer us 10 tracks
of catchy, infectious rock. At least that seems to be what the band wished
to do. What we get instead is 10 undistinguishable, unoriginal,
painfully predictable versions of what appears to be a single song, most
likely written by a 10 year old, possibly deaf, child. This thing is
offensive to anyone with even an ounce of taste.
The most interesting thing about this band is their background. This
band is the brainchild of front man/guitarist Joshua Loucka, the front man
of now defunct NYC band Shift. Shift was one of those bands that most
people seemed to like. They were pop, they were rock, they were
marginally emo/ore (excuse me for using the taboo term), but most of all
they were fun. There was a charisma to this band that made their pop
laden sound so attractive. They were signed to Sony/Columbia and had
infectious songs like 'The Best Song I Ever Wrote' and 'I Want To Be
Rich'. The band called it quits after their drummer, Samantha Mahoney,
got drafted into Hole (currently she is in Mötley Crüe - ed.).
The Big Collapse offers none of the innocent charm that made Shift so
great. It is obvious that the band's sound is rooted in Shift territory,
but the magic is long gone. Every track on this album is a clich
